Seth Godin, in his book Tribes, talks about how to improve your Tribe. He gives some bullet points but I would like to expound on these thoughts for a minute.
The two requirements of a Tribe:
• A Shared Interest
• A Way to Communicate
There are all different kinds of Tribes out there…Dog Lovers Tribe, Mix Martial Arts Tribe, Habitat For Humanity Tribe, your church could be your Tribe, etc. Heck, I was on a business trip in NC a few years ago and in the hotel I stayed in was the National Taxidermists Society’s yearly convention!! That’s a Tribe if I ever saw one!
Well, since we are all really focused on Social Media I’ll explain how the two bullet points above relate to us. We have a shared interest in home based business and marketing on the internet through social media avenues. Our ways of communicating are through several different avenues such as Facebook, Email, Skype, Phone, YouTube, Twitter, Blogs, etc.
So that makes us a Tribe!
Within the Tribe communication can be done four different ways.
• Leader to Tribe
• Tribe to Leader
• Tribe Member to Tribe Member
• Tribe Member to Outsider
Let’s talk about each one of these and how the communication is done:
Leader to Tribe
It’s important for the leader to stay in constant communication with his / her Tribe. If you lead a Tribe you need to be constantly communicating the Tribe’s vision to the members so everyone stays motivated and educated.
One good way to do this is webinars that the leader may host. Some may be free but some require a fee. If the leader is putting out a solid vision and the content that is being taught is valuable and will empower the members then the fee will be well worth it.
Tribe to Leader
It’s always good for a Tribe members to communicate with their leader, but what’s more important is that the leader communicates back to the members. Here’s an example, the leader writes a blog post on their blog and the members start commenting. A good leader would respond to all the comments that were being made on his / her blog. This shows that the leader cares and wants to be engaged with his / her members. When a leader stops communicating with his / her members the members might find a new leader.
Tribe Member to Tribe Member
Tribe member to Tribe member is great because it helps create relationships and partnerships. One way this can be done is through social networking sites like the Ning Community. With this community established member can talk to each other, share content, and learn from each other. Many times partnerships or joint ventures can establish within the Tribe that would have never happened if the leader didn’t bring the community together and empower the members to communicate with each other.
Tribe Member to Outsider
This is great because it allows the Tribe member to be an advocate for the Tribe and promote the Tribe to other people. If the Tribe member does a good job at this the outsider may be interested in joining the Tribe which will increase the Tribe with another like minded member and that new member can do the same thing…tell another outsider about the Tribe and continue the momentum.
So as you can see there are many ways to communicate but the most important thing is to keep a steady stream of communication going. Great communication allows for a Great Tribe!

Thanks for the comment! Yes communication is so important in the business. If we all work at being able to communicate better through the social media outlets that we have then we all would go farther in this journey!

The term “Tribe” is new social media ligo. The term has been around for a while it is as old as the human spirit.
Mike your post is a must read for everyone.
We all have the ability to lead, we all can and have already belonged to a tribe of some kind.
Every tribe shares that common bond and common community that attracts us.
I remember when my kids were small and we joined tribes with the YMCA. One was the Indian Princesses and Indian Guides tribes one for Dads and their little girls and one for dads and their little boys.
We all had tribe names. One of mine was “Long Nose” we had just great times together.
Everyone needs to remember that there are lost souls waiting and needing to be lead and it is up to you to share your message.
Be sure to do it a way that resonate with who you really are …and you will attract your ideal community.
You have a choice so, make it a better than terrific day!

Great post on Tribe interaction, Mike. Also embedded in there are the important steps people must take to be an active part of a tribe. Its important that people realize you can’t just join a tribe and expect to be lifted up. You still have to work and participate.

Jason,
You hit the nail right on the head! You have to actually work to be successful! That’s why many people fail in this business! They just think they can ride the shirt tails of their upline and the money will start rolling in. How far from the truth! A Tribe is successful when everyone does THEIR part. Good insight!

Michael,
Thank you for sharing this valuable information.
The segments of the various ways Tribes can be done gave me a really good understanding on how Tribe networks might or should work and be structured.
VERY helpful information, indeed.

Hi Mike, Thank you for posting this information. You make some key points as it relates to specific roles whether a leader or a member. I was thinking along these lines today and really like what being part of a tribe does not only from a business perspective but for the growth of individuals as well. Being around other like minded people supporting the same common goal is very exciting.

Kellie,
hey! Yes there are specific roles plus specific communication tactics that the leader must use and that the Tribe member must use. When everything works together the communication is great and the message is consistent!

Michael,
Until just a few short months ago, the word tribe brought images of aboriginies to my mind.
This is by far one of the most important aspects of online marketing that I’ve had the good fortune to learn about. Through connections with tribe members I’ve been able to form incredible relationships, be of service to others, and be lifted up. It definitely is work, but is well worth it.
Thanks for your great post

Thanks for this post. I neve looked at tribes in that light where there are 4 different positions. That makes so much sense to me and helps me see a little more clearly as to what I need to focus on.

Hi Michael,
Just wanted to give some feedback on what’s been going on since I became involved in an awesome tribe:
I’ve met incredible people who are all like minded, go getters
I’ve become involved in joint ventures
I’ve learned amazing things through the content my tribe members have shares
I’ve learned true lessons in leadership through watching top tribe members
More and more visitors are checking out my content
I’ve been able to help others to promote their content
Yup, I would say that tribes are valuable!!
