Making A Custom Tab For Your Facebook Fan Page

December 17th, 2009 by Michael Feil

Facebook Fan Pages can help grow your business tremendously…if you use them the right way. Many people don’t know how customizable fan pages can be. There is so much you can do with them…you just need to be creative.

Today I’m going to show you an application that you can use to set up a customizable “Welcome” tab and an “About Me” tab. These are just two of the possibilities that you can do with this application. You can make other tabs that are related to your niche, company, product, etc. The possibilities are endless with this application!

To get an idea of what I mean Click Here For My Facebook Welcome Tab.

This application is called Static FBML.

Most web pages are built with HTML code which stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. Facebook has its own version of HTML called FBML (FaceBook Markup Language). Most of the code is the same but there is some specific code changes when it comes to showing a YouTube video.

A normal YouTube embedded with HTML code would look like this….

<object width=”425″ height=”344″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/BIX13I9uHi8&hl=en_US&fs=1&”></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/BIX13I9uHi8&hl=en_US&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”425″ height=”344″></embed></object>

A video that a is going to go into a tab that is created with Static FBML will look like this…

<center><p align=”center”><fb:swf swfbgcolor=”000000″ imgstyle=”border-width:3px; border-color:white;”
swfsrc=’http://www.youtube.com/v/5JAIhNszaeE
imgsrc=’http://img.youtube.com/vi/5JAIhNszaeE/1.jpg’
width=’340′ height=’270′ /></p></center>

When building your Static FBML page and inserting a YouTube video you can use the above code but just take out the red text and put in your link to your video.

Most of the other code is standard HTML code. If you are not sure about how to build a page using html code you can use Windows Live Writer which is a free program that you can use to convert WYSIWYG to HTML.

If you’re interested in learning more about HTML and building web pages I use a great program that is very easy to use called XSite Pro and you can get more information about it at http://www.xisteprolearning.com.

Check out this video that will walk you through getting Static FBML up and running on your Fan Page…

If you are still clueless how to make a custom tab on your Fanpage after reading this post and viewing the video then you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed!

Awww, I’m just kiddin’! This is actually really technical stuff and some very advanced Facebook techniques so if you are really having problems with this I can custom make one for you.

Developing Your Own Tribe Power Hour

November 23rd, 2009 by Michael Feil

Recently my core Tribe of 5 guys started a Tribe Power Hour. This is a very fun time for us and we get a lot done in this short amount of time. I wanted to show you how we structure our time and show you what we do so you can in turn use these same techniques to build up your own core Tribe.

It all starts with an agreed upon time that works for us all, and we then conference call each other through Skype to start the process.

We normally start our sessions by sending out a tweet something like, “Doing a Syndication Power Hour With My Tribe @karyrogney, @Kenpickard, @NickLogantv, and @JonAlfredsson.”  We then update our status on Facebook with something similar.

We all start at one of our blogs and take the latest blog post, read it, and comment on it.  Having the plug-in Comment Luv on the blog will give you back links to your blog which is always good because it creates exposure for you.

Once we’re done commenting on the blog we will then Tweet it.  We do this by using the plug-in TweetMeMe or some of us have ViralTweets that we use too. In any case the post gets tweeted.  For more information on this GO HERE.

After that we all social bookmark the post though the plug-in that we all have installed on our blog called OnlyWire. This is a great plug-in because it allows you to social bookmark your post to about 22 social bookmarking sites in just one click.

Once we have completed that process with all of 5 of our blogs we then move the syndication over to Facebook.

On Facebook we all have developed Fan (business) Pages to help promote our Tribes content. We will post links from each other’s blogs there, we will promote each other there, we will comment on what other people are saying on the page, and just do as much interaction as we can with each other.

We will then do something similar to our personal Facebook Pages.

We are doing all of this while Skype is on in the background so we are constantly talking, brainstorming, and joking with each other. What is normally about an hour syndication process normally turns in to about 1 ½ to 2 hours. The time goes by fast and it actually is very fun to do.

Since we have done this our exposure has grown leaps and bounds. What I was doing for a while just by myself, I now have 4 other people that made the commitment to regularly syndicate my content getting my message out that that much faster and that much stronger.

I want to encourage you to find yourself a Tribe of 4 or 5 people and start doing this right away. You will definitely start seeing immediate results!

Social Tribes – 3 Facebook Pages For Free Blog Syndication

November 7th, 2009 by Michael Feil

today I wanted to share with you a follow up to my Zombie Marketing post. My friend George Fourie wrote the following post. You can check out his other post on his Social Tribes blog called That MLM Beat.

Social Tribes being formed within social tribes? Definitely so. But how about adding a touch of free blog syndication?

With literally the entire world on Facebook, more and more smaller communities, a.k.a social tribes, are connecting like minded network marketers and social media enthusiasts.

These social tribes started out with Facebook groups, which had more of a ‘vanity’ layout with the focus on the group creator rather than place focus on social interaction.

Facebook Pages however are quite the opposite. Facebook Pages are all about the interaction, commenting, approving (like feature) of status updates and making conversation.

So what’s new? Well, 3 Facebook Pages where you can attract more visitors to your Personal Development or MLM Blog while boosting your social media buzz and retweets on Twitter.

Kary Rogney, Michael Feil and Ken Pickard have created 3 different Facebook Fan Pages for maximum free content syndication.

The idea is simple: As soon as you’ve completed a new blog post, head over to the wall and paste a brief description of your post, the headline and a link to your new post.

The social tribe members will comment, share and retweet your blog posts.

That’s it? Not quite. Be sure to do a little homework and read the notes on each individual page.

Kary’s social tribe for example suggests that you build relationships with a minimum of 5 people within the social tribe.

Not just random 5 people, but 5 people that with similar backgrounds, goals, philosophies and so forth. So 5 people that you will want to befriend anyway.

These are 5 people that you can grow an alliance with amongst other things, but lets leave all the juicy details for the notes section on the individual Facebook pages.

Here are your 3 social tribes for free content syndication:

Michael Feil’s Business Page

Kary Rogney’s Business Page

Ken Pickard’s Business Page

To get the full benefit from the free content syndication, be sure to join all 3 social tribes.

Zombie Marketing: It’s Fun To Eat Brains

October 29th, 2009 by Michael Feil

In light of Halloween I thought I’d put together a fun little post on what we can learn from zombies.  But first let’s look ZOmbiesat what zombies are and when they can do.

Zombies are dead people that have come back to life that have an appetite for the human brain.  Zombies are determined.  They’re not fast, but they’re determined!  They will do anything to sink their teeth into the human brain.  In the movies you will see zombies with cut off limbs making their way to the living to eat their brains.  You will even see zombies with no legs doing a military like crawl to their next meal.  And if you notice once a zombie eats a brain their hunger for brains is still there.  Zombies never lose their hunger!

You will also notice that zombies travel in packs.  If you run into one zombie, sure enough, you will run into more.  If they corner you then you’re pretty much done.

So how does this transfer into building Tribes?  Well, let’s again understand the meaning of a Tribe.   A Tribe is a group of people that have a shared interest and a way to communicate.  In Social Media there is never just you!  There is usually you and several other people…YOUR TRIBE.  In our Social Media Tribes we travel around in packs to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, social bookmarking sites, etc. helping each other promote our content.

Like zombies we are not usually fast at it, but we’re thorough.  We chip away little by little to get to our goal.  A common trait for us Social Media Tribe members is that we’re determined and we’re going to reach our goal no matter what.  Nothing is going to stop us and we will never lose our hunger!

Let’s talk about eating brains for a minute.  Just like zombies we love to eat brains, but we’re just not as messy as zombies!  When we go to other Social Media Marketer’s blogs and read what they are doing and gaining insight, knowledge, and strategies to better our marketing skills we are in a sense eating brains.  We’re taking knowledge (what’s inside another person’s brain) “eating it (learning from it),” and digesting that knowledge so we can grow strong from it.

Then there are the mentally deranged humans that feed zombies.  That would be people like me, Kary Rogney, and Ken Pickard.  We’re feeding you zombies fresh brains for your enjoyment!  Say what??  Let me explain…

On Facebook Kary, Ken, and I have put together business pages that promote other people’s content.  If you have a blog then you are pretty much on the ball and have a good idea as to what you’re doing.  So this means you probably have good content.  You want that content out there, and you want that exposure.  So all you have to do is go onto our Facebook business pages and post your link there and bam, you have instant exposure.

So getting back to our zombie analogy Kary, Ken, and I are feeding your brains to zombies so they can go on our business pages, click the link to your blog post, read your knowledge (eat your brain), and digest it so they can grow strong and make it to their goal.

If you want your brain eaten (if you want to post your link to your blog post on our business pages) just click the following links)…

Michael Feil’s Business Page

Kary Rogney’s Business Page

Ken Pickard’s Business Page

Ok you zombies!  There’s a lot of great blogs out there!  So eat up!  Also Tweet this and Comment on it if you like it!

The Benefits Of Using OnlyWire For Social Bookmarking

October 21st, 2009 by Michael Feil

If you are trying to build a Tribe of like minded individuals through social media marketing then you really want to take advantage of social bookmarking.

Social bookmarking is tagging a website and saving it for later. Instead of saving them to your web browser, you are saving them to the web. Also, because your bookmarks are online, you can easily share them with friends.

The Benefits of Social Bookmarking…

1. Instant social traffic. A well written news article or blog post has the potential to drive massive traffic to your site.

2. Hundreds of one-way links to your website in a short amount of time.

3. Backlinks appear very quickly in Search Engines. Most links on regular pages often take weeks or months to be indexed. We have seen a majority of our social backlinks get indexed within a couple days.

As a marketer, you can leverage social bookmarking by setting up accounts at these sites and sharing the links to your sites with others. There are tools that let you submit a single page or site to dozens of social bookmarking sites with one click of the mouse, so you´re not entering them all by hand.

One of those tools is called OnlyWire. This WordPress Plug-in tool is great! Below is a video I made for you to learn how to install and use OnlyWire. Enjoy!

Tribal Communication

September 25th, 2009 by Michael Feil

Seth Godin, in his book Tribes, talks about how to improve your Tribe. He gives some bullet points but I would like to expound on these thoughts for a minute.

The two requirements of a Tribe:

• A Shared Interest
• A Way to Communicate

There are all different kinds of Tribes out there…Dog Lovers Tribe, Mix Martial Arts Tribe, Habitat For Humanity Tribe, your church could be your Tribe, etc. Heck, I was on a business trip in NC a few years ago and in the hotel I stayed in was the National Taxidermists Society’s yearly convention!! That’s a Tribe if I ever saw one!

Well, since we are all really focused on Social Media I’ll explain how the two bullet points above relate to us. We have a shared interest in home based business and marketing on the internet through social media avenues. Our ways of communicating are through several different avenues such as Facebook, Email, Skype, Phone, YouTube, Twitter, Blogs, etc.

So that makes us a Tribe!

Within the Tribe communication can be done four different ways.

• Leader to Tribe
• Tribe to Leader
• Tribe Member to Tribe Member
• Tribe Member to Outsider

Let’s talk about each one of these and how the communication is done:

Leader to Tribe

It’s important for the leader to stay in constant communication with his / her Tribe. If you lead a Tribe you need to be constantly communicating the Tribe’s vision to the members so everyone stays motivated and educated.

One good way to do this is webinars that the leader may host. Some may be free but some require a fee. If the leader is putting out a solid vision and the content that is being taught is valuable and will empower the members then the fee will be well worth it.

Tribe to Leader

It’s always good for a Tribe members to communicate with their leader, but what’s more important is that the leader communicates back to the members. Here’s an example, the leader writes a blog post on their blog and the members start commenting. A good leader would respond to all the comments that were being made on his / her blog. This shows that the leader cares and wants to be engaged with his / her members. When a leader stops communicating with his / her members the members might find a new leader.

Tribe Member to Tribe Member

Tribe member to Tribe member is great because it helps create relationships and partnerships. One way this can be done is through social networking sites like the Ning Community. With this community established member can talk to each other, share content, and learn from each other. Many times partnerships or joint ventures can establish within the Tribe that would have never happened if the leader didn’t bring the community together and empower the members to communicate with each other.

Tribe Member to Outsider

This is great because it allows the Tribe member to be an advocate for the Tribe and promote the Tribe to other people. If the Tribe member does a good job at this the outsider may be interested in joining the Tribe which will increase the Tribe with another like minded member and that new member can do the same thing…tell another outsider about the Tribe and continue the momentum.

So as you can see there are many ways to communicate but the most important thing is to keep a steady stream of communication going. Great communication allows for a Great Tribe!

A Tribe’s Third Party Evidence

September 19th, 2009 by Michael Feil

Today I want to talk about third party evidence and how it can help you grow your business and following. If I’m trying to sell you something I can say all day that what I have to offer is the best thing in the world, but I want to say that because I want the sale.

Third party evidence is when someone that is not related to your product has something good to say about it. We see this all the time in marketing. For example, Enterprise Rent-A-Car call you for a short survey after you have rented one of their cars to see how your experience was. Through the survey they can compile statistics that show how many customers were satisfied with their service and use that data for marketing purposes.

Another example would be the movie industry. How many times have you heard, “Man, you gotta check this movie out! It was great!” The movie industry relies on your third party evidence (you telling people to go see their movie) to spread the word about their product (the movie).

In social media this can be done one of several ways. Here are just a few:

  • Testimonial
  • Video on YouTube
  • Posting a comment in your comment section of your blog
  • Showing the stats of how many hits you received on your blog
  • Social bookmarking
  • Retweeting

Today I’m going to focus on retweeting your Tribe’s content so they can have massive exposure. And if they are true Tribe members guess what will happen? They will retweet your content and give you massive exposure as well!

So check out the video!

Since we’ve been talking about how important Tribes are I feel it’s important to show you another way to support your Tribe Members.

This method will give your Tribe Members more exposure and it’s a great way to promote their blogs. If you have a blog from WordPress.org you can use this powerful plug in call RSS Shortcode. Below is a video on how I use it and how to set it up.

To see it in action just go to my “Colleagues” tab at http://michaelfeil.com/colleagues/.

If this has helped you please leave a comment and Tweet it! I appreciate it!

How Can Tribes Help Me?

July 23rd, 2009 by Michael Feil

Today we are going to talk about something very important that can make or break your business, and that is a tribe.

What is a Tribe?

A Tribe is a group of your social media friends who have banded together over nothing more than a particular shared interest.  That interest could be to support a cause, to promote a band, to make money, or what ever else they want to do.  Basically, the Tribe bands together to help other members out.

My Tribe consists of other home based business owners that want to make a difference in this world as well as make some money along the way.  My Tribe understands that in order for us to be successful in our own personal lives we must help other people be successful first because when they become successful we too will be successful.  It’s just how it works…and it DOES work!

So what we do is promote each other’s content.  PERIOD!  There are some “Tribal Leaders” that say, “Well, I will promote their educational content but I will not promote any of their money making products or services because if I do that I will be putting money in their pockets and none in mine.”  This is a totally wrong way of thinking and if you are A Tribal Leader that thinks this way you may have your Tribal members for a while but you will eventually lose your members because they are going to see that you are not fully committed to their cuase or mission.

Like I said, build other people up, help them succeed, and you too will succeed and rise to the top!

Now a Tribe is different from a Community. Here is how Michael Dell explains the significance of a Community.   He has what’s called the “3 Cs” which is Content, Commerce, and Community.  Michael Dell said that in order for you to be the leader on the internet you need to have Good Content.  You need to offer something of value to the people.  Then you need Commerce.  You need to sell something that people want or need.  But nothing will happen if you don’t have a Community of people that will support and follow you.

The Community won’t happen until you get with a few good Tribal Leaders that will help you promote yourself and your product or service.  The Tribe comes first, the Community will follow.  But the great thing is that the community will not only follow you, they will follow all the members in your Tribe because you all will be promoting each other and be seen as “The Elite” or the leaders and experts in the field you are representing.

How do you form a Tribe?

All you really need to do is just ask a few people if they would be in agreement to start promoting each others content (educational and fancial).  Normally you want to seek out people that have similar interests as you do.

From that piont you will be promoting their content on your blog, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, and where ever else you can.  Naturally they will be doing the same.

What if they don’t keep their end of the bargain?

For me it’s a two step process.  First, I would send them an email to see if they are OK, having problems, stuck on something, and to see if I can help in any way.  If they say they are good, but still don’t promote your content then I would just drop them and find someone else out there that is more reliable.  Believe me, there are pleanty of people out there that would be willing to partner up with you.

Things happen in people’s lives, circumstances change, and people change. Sometimes people are all gung-ho when they first start then lose their momentum if they get frustrated.  That’s OK, this business may not be for them.  So just find someone else to take their place, but the important thing is to make sure you hold each other accountable.  You need to keep your end of the bargain and they need to keep theirs.

Once you start your Tribe and everyone is putting out each other’s content you will soon see people wanting to correspond with you and wanting to know what you’re all about.  The more valuable content you put out the faster your community will grow.

So that is a brief summary as to what a Tribe is and how a Tribe can help build your business fast!

My challenge to you is if you do not have a Tribe yet seek out a few people and start your own Tribe.

Now I want to leave you with a short video of Seth Godin talking about the importance of Tribes.  Enjoy!

If you like this please comment and retweet!  I greatly appreciate it!
