The Three Foundational Qualities Of A Leader

June 27th, 2009 by Michael Feil

Today I wantto talk about the Three Foundational Qualities of a Leader taken from the #1 Best Selling book on leadership, Launching A Leadership Revolution by Chris Brady and Orrin Woodward.
Here they are:

- Hungry

- Hone-able

- Honest

All leaders have to have these three qualities. They are very important for someone to reach the leadership status. Why? Well, let’s review them real quick…

Foundation Quality Number One – Hungry

Let’s look a hunger in general. Have you ever watched the news and they were doing a story on people that live in 3rd world countries who were starving and you see this hunger relief truck backing up to a crowd of these starving people? What happens when one of the relief workers opens up the back of the truck and starts throwing sacks of rice out to the people? The crowd goes crazy! They start pushing, people are getting knocked down, and sometimes fights break out? Why? Because these people are hungry and will do anything it takes to get food in them and totheir families.

As leaders we need to have that same hunger burning inside of us. We need to think of books, leadership audio CDs, and associating with the right people as the food that will satisfy our hunger. We need to believe in ourselves that once we get the right information in our heads we will have the power to make our lives and our family’s lives better. That, my friends, is the kind of hunger I am talking about!
You need to find out what is your motivation. There are three levels of motivation that I want to share:

Material Success

This is financial independence and material things. When we position ourselves as a leader we have the opportunityto make a lot of money. Many people get into network marketing, internet marketing, start their own business, investing, etc. because they want material success. They want to pay off their debt, they want to buy a new car, they want to buy a vacation home, they want to travel more, they want a Rolex, etc. So this is the first level of motivation. It’s wanting better things for yourself andyour family.

Recognition and Respect

Most people crave the recognition that others provide; apart of human nature is a deep need to be noticed and appreciated by others. It is not secret that everyone needs encouragement. For that reason, recognition by others is another healthy source of motivation.

Some people love to get rewards from their job, while others like to hear that they are doing a great job from their mentors. These and other forms of recognition canand should be used as motivations for performance.

Many people are motivated to obtain the respect of amentor, parent, teacher, boss, or spouse. Yearning for respect can be a strong motivator. So find those whom you admire, who are in a position in life you desire to be in, who are living their lives in a manner you wish to emulate, and strive to obtain their respect for what you are doing and accomplishing.

Purpose, Destiny, Legacy

The motivation factors that we have talked about so far are all great, but purpose takes us our of the realm of living only for ourselves and our own selfish desires, and onto a higher plane. Purpose involves sacrifice for the greater good, contribution for making a bigger difference, and energies directed at a long term view.

Destiny takes purpose further, comprehending the spiritual component. Destiny says that we were created, created for a purpose, and the unique abilities and opportunities that we find in our lives are God-given. Who you are, where you live, the talents you were born with, the opportunities that have and will come your way, are all part of a bigger picture, a picture into which you were painted to fulfill apart that only you can fulfill.

Legacy results from understanding our purpose in the bigger picture of our destiny and living it to its fullest. What we have and what we are given are not as important as what we contribute and what we leave behind. As one famous quote says, “My life is my message.”

Foundation Quality Number Two – Hone-able

Next we need to be hone-able which is another word for teachable. Leaders approach situation and challenges with a learner’s mind-set, that is, as a student and not as acritic. You have to come with an open mind and ready to learn. Everyone is not on the same plane so there are going to be people that have some leadership experience and know some principles, while others are brand new and want to get out of where they currently are.

So knowing that you haven’t “arrived” (HINT: No one ever arrives! We all can strive to do better that what weare currently doing now) and knowing that you want to improve will help you become a leader much faster than someone that constantly questions everything and is tough to work with. Leaders must approach learning with a positive, curious inquisitiveness, and never allow their responsibilities or setbacks to sour their dispositions.

Foundation Quality Number Three – Honorable

Author Jeff O’Leary, in The Centurion Principles, writes,”Honor, encompasses the virtues of integrity and honesty, self-denial, loyalty, and a servant’s humility to those in authority above as well as a just and merciful heart to those below.” In fact, honor is the force that holds a leader’s hunger in check. Without honor, hunger runs rampant and ultimately serves only selfish interests. Honor is the component that makes hunger productive for the leader’s fellow man.

This concept of honor is so important to a leader because people will follow a leader only as far as they feel they can trust him. People will not follow a leader they can’t trust.

He’s an example, if you work for a boss and your boss is coming into work late, going off for very long lunches, and getting caught in lies I am sure that you and your co-workers are not going to respect, follow, or trust him or her. But if your boss is honoring you with his or her actions, you will honor him or her by giving the respect he deserves.

Honor is, I believe, the most important of all three. The reason I believe this is because in order for the hunger and teaching to begin you need to get yourself right first. It has been said, “The internal victories precede the external victories.” Having honor means you are a standup person, you’re dependable, and people can trust you.

I would like to challenge you to do is to really think if you have the three foundational qualities that a leader needs to have in order to become an effective leader and what your motivating factor(s) are. And if you don’t have these three qualities sit down and write out a plan on what steps you need to take in order for you to get there becuase once start thinking with this kind of mindset you will see positive changes in your personal life and professional life.

Enjoy your day!

Personalizing Your Site For A Better Visitor Experience

June 27th, 2009 by Michael Feil

You’ve probably have notice that this past year there is a growing shift that’s taking place online. At first there were only faint “rumblings” of change. Then came the successive “earthquakes” in the form of major changes in pay-per-click advertising, which sent many people not only scrambling, but also back to the drawing board or offline completely.

It’s no longer important to have good information to make a profit online. Or even the best information, for that matter. Since its explosion into the public arena back in 1994, the Internet has continued to grow and progress in many different ways simultaneously. The end result is not only that the internet itself has become more sophisticated, but so has its users.

This fact has not been lost on the key players of the Internet, the search engines. In order for them to stay effective, they too, have had to continually determine and then meet the increasing demands of their users.

One of the best known, Google, has decided to start doing site ranking and placement based upon a new “benchmark”, Visitor Experience.

The new stated goal is to create the best and most positive “Visitor Experience” for your site or blog. Ideally, the better the “V.E.”, the better the search engine placement. Of course, having relevant, usable information on your site or blog contributes to this.

Now that this fact is finally starting to “filter down” through the online marketing world in the aftermath of the pay-per-click advertising shake-up, the question that site owners should be asking themselves is, what steps can I take that will contribute to a positive Visitor Experience for my site or blog?

While there are several methods or tools that could be used to bring about the desired result, many of them are costly or are difficult to implement. Unless you have fairly deep pockets or are a computer expert, this approach creates a dilemma for the many thousands of site owners who either have little technical expertise or are cash-strapped.

So, is there a workable solution for these folks to use to improve “Visitor Experience” for their sites? The answer is a resounding yes! It’s the very same one that has created tremendous profits for direct marketers years prior to, and even after, the creation of the Internet.

The easiest and most powerful way to create a positive “Visitor Experience” for your site or blog can be described with one word, personalization. If you have a website that is just like everyone elses then there is nothing unique about you. Even if you want to keep that replacated website at least make a lead caputre page that will introduce yourself, give the readers your background info and how you can help them, and put an autoresponder form up there so you can capture your reader’s information.

Also, try using audio or video on your website. The more interactive your website is the more you will “connect” with your readers. For example, look at http://www.incomepowersystem.com/. This is a website to a product that I promote. I was given the same website as everyone else, but the difference is that I put up a lead caputre page with a video, and also put my own personality into the main site which makes me stand out.

The reason why I created this blog is to connect more with my subscribers. I want to hear from you so I can interact with you. Please use the comment section at the bottom of the blogs I write to comment or ask more questions. I want to create a dialogue with you!

Once you’ve implemented this simple strategy, you could be pleasantly surprised at the potential results from this addition to your site or blog. Of course, you would also want to implement this with your newsletter and/or sales letter. When your cash flow allows you to, your next step would be to purchase additional tools or resources to further enhance the Visitor Experience for your web presence.

Bringing People That Are Online…Offline

June 27th, 2009 by Michael Feil

One of the biggest misconceptions about Internet Marketing is that it only works if it is done online. After all, so the argument goes, the Web has millions of people using it, so the best way to get them to your site would be through online advertising, right? Well, it sounds good in theory, but you’re only reaching a portion of your total potential market. What about the millions of people who aren’t online?

The fact is that not everyone who has a computer uses it to go online like you do. Of course there are also thousands of people who either don’t have or don’t want a computer. These people are part of the larger segment of your potential market that is offline. And unless you make the effort to target them offline, they will never know that you or your product exist.

Direct mail has proven successful for many years and recently several of the best-known marketers have started using it along with their online campaigns. One of the easiest ways to use direct mail for offline advertising of your online product is to simply print out and mail your website sales letter. Another popular method is to send postcards with some teaser copy and your product’s web address for more information.

Of course there is also offline media like radio and television. Those late night infomercials point the viewer to the product’s website to order or for more information. Airing a commercial for your product or service on radio or TV with a link to your website is another possibility.

Speaking of offline media, let’s not forget the newspapers. Whether it’s a full or quarter page ad, a classified ad, or ad piece inserted into the paper, this is a great and fairly inexpensive way to drive offline prospects to your online offer. Of course, you could also contribute an article with a link to your site in the byline.

And let’s not overlook the “low-budget” avenues of offline promotion as well. Bulletin boards in restaurants or businesses are still very effective methods of free advertising. You might also consider having a business card printed for your product, with the web address included. Using your computer, you could create and print out flyers for your product or service and (with permission) post them at area businesses or leave small stacks of them in the library or other public places.

If you’re really into some creative offline advertising, you might have bumper stickers or window decals made with your website address. T-shirts or caps with your website name are another possibility. And, if you’ve got an adequate budget, you might order some promotional items like pens, cups or mouse pads with your product’s name and web address printed on them.

There is so much out there you can do offline to direct your traffic to go online and look at your website for more information. If you want to really learn how to market on online as well as offline you can check out my 1-2-3 Power System at http://www.incomepowersystem.com/. It is a great system and will teach you a lot about marketing in both areas.

How Do You Get People To Stay On Your Website?

June 27th, 2009 by Michael Feil

One of the most crucial aspects for determining a website’s level of success is time. If you think about the sites that are continually appearing in the list of the Top Ten Most-Visited Sites, one of the reasons for their success is that the site owners have figured out how to get visitors to spend significant amounts of time at their sites.

So, if an “extended stay” at your site will contribute to its overall level of success, then we must find the answer to the question, “What does it take to give a site “staying power”? There are several possible solutions that we could consider using.

One of the most effective ways to get visitors to spend time at your site is to offer them significant amounts of information relevant to your site’s topic. For example, if your site was about how to care for Tennessee Walking Horses, you would not only want to include articles and information about basic horse care, but also additional articles about specific and relevant information on issues and concerns that pertain only to Tennessee Walkers.

But that’s just for starters. Once you’ve given them access to this pertinent information, you need to make the visit an interactive one. That is, you need to find ways to create a dialogue with your visitors. A simple way to do so would be to include a poll on your site, or better yet, at the end of each article. It could ask, “Did you find this article helpful?” or “What else would you like to know about ___?” This way, you could also use it to gather feedback and suggestions for improving your site and/or its content.

Another “sure-fire” way to create visitor interaction is a website forum. By inviting them to join your forum and comment on topics or information related to your site’s theme, you’ll not only get them to stay longer, but they might also keep coming back to visit the forum. Of course, you will have to monitor the forum yourself or find a dependable and knowledgeable person to moderate it for you.

While we’re on the subject, don’t forget about Blogs…like this one! :) That’s right, a blog is a great tool to create interaction and “staying power.” This is especially true if the content is updated regularly. By allowing visitors to post their comments about your content, they’ll be spending more time at your site. And if you’ve organized your content properly, then they may also spend additional time clicking links leading them throughout your site.

Of course we also need to include Membership Sites on this list as well. With a well-designed, content-rich site, whether paid or free, you have one of the best methods available for creating significant “staying power” for your site. And by incorporating some of the other features we’ve previously discussed, along with the continual addition of fresh, relevant content, your themed Membership Site just might have the potential to move into the Top Ten list!

One tool that you can use that tracks how long a person has stayed at your website plus a lot of other great information that you can use to build your business is statcounter.com. This is a great tool and it’s free too! All you do is register your site on your StatCounter member’s area, plug in your website and then it will spit out an html code that you can put anywhere on your webpage and then it will start tracking for you.

Leave your comments with more ideas on how you keep people coming back to your websites!

Take care,

Mike Feil
