Today I want to talk about third party evidence and how it can help you grow your business and following. If I’m trying to sell you something I can say all day that what I have to offer is the best thing in the world, but I want to say that because I want the sale.
Third party evidence is when someone that is not related to your product has something good to say about it. We see this all the time in marketing. For example, Enterprise Rent-A-Car call you for a short survey after you have rented one of their cars to see how your experience was. Through the survey they can compile statistics that show how many customers were satisfied with their service and use that data for marketing purposes.
Another example would be the movie industry. How many times have you heard, “Man, you gotta check this movie out! It was great!” The movie industry relies on your third party evidence (you telling people to go see their movie) to spread the word about their product (the movie).
In social media this can be done one of several ways. Here are just a few:
- Testimonial
- Video on YouTube
- Posting a comment in your comment section of your blog
- Showing the stats of how many hits you received on your blog
- Social bookmarking
- Retweeting
Today I’m going to focus on retweeting your Tribe’s content so they can have massive exposure. And if they are true Tribe members guess what will happen? They will retweet your content and give you massive exposure as well!
So check out the video!

13 Comments and Pings on A Tribe’s Third Party Evidence
This is great tip. Retweeting your tribe’s content is a great idea, but I think you do have to be careful. Your first priority is your followers, so you want to make sure you only retweet good stuff. Don’t be tweeting content simply in the hopes of getting reciprocal tweets.
If you tweet garbage, your followers won’t be followers for long.

Jason,
Thanks for your comment! Retweeting valuable content goes without saying. In the business world of Social Meda knowing what you had for lunch or that you decided to wear you black shoes instead of your red shoes is not important to me.
Valuable content are things like leadership quotes, articles, blog posts, etc. We always want to give value to our readers….not garbage like you said.
So if you retweet you Tribe’s VALUABLE CONTENT it’s a win / win situation for all!
Hi Michael,
Great information. Thank you for reminding us of what it means to be a part of a tribe. I enjoy retweeting and want my name attached to other people’s valuable content. It is definitely a win/win for all.

Michael,
Yes, third party validation is everything – and the Tweetmeme feature is an amazing tool to move that along. When others like our content it’s incredibly easy for them to retweet it.
What some people may not realize is that when they retweet good content, not only are they promoting the person who created the content, but they’re positioning themselves as leaders within the community by sharing value regardless of whether they “profit” or not.
